Foundry molds are wooden patterns usually from the early 20th century, carved out or built up to create negative space, which in turn was used to make an inverse form that was part of the process for the casting of metal. The molds are filled with sand, and once molds are removed, liquid metal is poured into the impression left by the pattern in the sand. The molds can then be reused multiple times to create new metal castings.
This mold was likely used to make a large metal wheel. The outside wood has been sanded and finished, and the metal parts removed, coated and replaced for preservation. The interior surfaces have been left unfinished, in “as found” condition. The round feet were scavenged from an abandoned roll top desk.
