Pas de Deux: Two Stories In Art: Artwork by Isabel Jackson

BFREE STUDIO is pleased to announce Pas de Deux: Two Stories In Art.  Our exhibition includes the artwork of Del Mar Artist Isabel Jackson who brings warmth and intimacy to California cool with her paintings featuring a truly West Coast aesthetic. A San Diego native, some of Jacksons work features local flora while others, like her Nike athletic shoe paintings,  invite the viewer into Isabel’s inner world. Her portraits of California insert the viewer into quotidian, yet increasingly imminent, private space. Themes of nostalgia, closeness and comfort are hallmarks of her artistic expression.

Jackson’s work affirms humanness with a window into the west coast soul. The lack of human faces or human presence in many of her pieces insert the viewer into a private space of quietude. An unlaced pair of sneakers lets the viewer know someone was here. A skateboard and a crushed beer can indicate the activities of a formless, genderless person, bringing nostalgia to those who relate and imagination to those who maybe cannot. In a world where we have been starved of the up close and personal, or perhaps engrossed in it, her work reminds the viewer that intimacy is important, as is youth culture and it’s modicums of expression.

Painting is Jackson’s meditation, where a state of flow is achieved in the slow, detailed actions that form a final piece. Once a piece is finished, she relinquishes ownership and control in the metaphysical sense. The painting belongs to the viewer and not the maker. The viewer is invited to interpret as they like.
